If you’ve ever experienced an ingrown toenail, you’ll know the pain and discomfort that goes along with this condition.

Ingrown toenails are very common among adults and sometimes children. While some cases allow for the affected person to recover within a few days without treatment, more severe cases could lead to bone infection.

At Free Your Feet Podiatry, we have dealt with dozens of cases of ingrown toenails and we have seen the damage that this condition can cause if left for too long.

The good news is that ingrown toenails are quite easily preventable if you take the following tips into consideration.

When Trimming Your Toenails, Trim Them Straight Across

Many people make the mistake of not trimming their toenails straight across the top and instead trim them in a curve parallel to the top of the toe. Curved toenails are one of the top causes of ingrown toenails.

If you get your nails done at a beauty salon, ensure that you ask the pedicurist not to trim your nails in a curved line but rather straight across.

If you have blood flow problems that prevent you from trimming your toenails, ensure that you see a podiatrist regularly.

Keep Your Toenails At A Medium Length

Cutting your toenails too short is a very common cause of ingrown toenails. If they are too short they may grow into the tissue. If your toenails are too long, they could break off and cause the same issue.

Wear The Right Size Shoe

When buying new shoes ensure that they are comfortable and fit your feet correctly and don’t pinch them or put pressure on your toes. Shoes that are too small, especially in the toe area, may result in your toenail growing into your skin tissue.

Nerve damage may keep you from realistically assessing whether shoes are too tight for you or not. If this applies to you, take extra care when buying shoes to ensure that you buy properly-fitted shoes.

If you work in a dangerous environment, make sure that you work the correct protective footwear.

When playing sports, you need to wear the footwear designed for the activity that you’re taking part in.
